Winter Break in Monmouth County: A Family-Friendly Guide

When school is out and the sugar rush hits, the big question becomes: What do we do with everyone for the next 10 days? The good news: you do not have to go far. Monmouth County is packed with winter friendly activities that keep kids off screens and out of each other’s personal space for at least a few hours.

Here is a local’s guide to family fun over the holiday break.

1. Step Back in Time at Allaire State Park
The Historic Village at Allaire in Farmingdale hosts seasonal events, from lantern tours to holiday craft markets, all set in a preserved 19th century iron making town.

What to do:
Stroll through the historic buildings and blacksmith shop.
Check the event calendar for special holiday programs.
Walk the trails if the weather cooperates. A hot chocolate stop after is mandatory.

2. Ice Skating & Shopping at Pier Village, Long Branch
Pier Village turns into a winter postcard with its outdoor ice rink, shops, and restaurants right on the ocean. Seasonal rinks and events have become a beloved shore tradition, mixing skating with holiday lights and plenty of food options.

Make a day of it:
Skate at the rink.
Grab lunch or dinner overlooking the boardwalk.
Window shop or pick up last minute gifts.

3. A Day in Red Bank: Shows, Arcades, and Over the Top Ice Cream
Red Bank is one of my favorite holiday break hubs because you can park once and do it all.

Catch a show at Count Basie Center for the Arts. The calendar is packed with holiday performances, concerts, and family shows throughout December.
Let the kids loose at Yestercades. Classic arcade games, pinball, and consoles await. Pay by the hour and let everyone lean into their inner 80s kid.
Treat yourselves at Coney Waffle. Layered ice cream creations, waffles, and side show shakes are basically a holiday activity on their own.

Add in some downtown shopping and you have a full day.

4. Explore Sandy Hook in the Off Season
Bundle up and head to Sandy Hook for a totally different beach day experience. Wide open sands, fewer crowds, and beautiful views make it peaceful in the best way.

Ideas:
Walk the paths and look for seals and migratory birds.
Explore historic Fort Hancock and the lighthouse grounds.
Bring a thermos of hot cocoa and watch the sunset.

5. Visit the Twin Lights in Highlands
The Twin Lights Historic Site offers panoramic views of the Atlantic and the New York skyline on clear days, plus a dose of history. You can climb the tower when open and wander the museum for a quick educational moment disguised as an outing.
