I love hosting, but I’ve learned something important over the years: entertaining doesn’t have to be complicated to be memorable.
Living by Design, to me, means creating a home that feels welcoming, warm, and lived in — not stressed, overplanned, or performative. I’m not interested in perfect place settings or a 12-step menu. I am interested in making people feel comfortable the moment they walk through the door.
These are the hosting essentials I come back to again and again. They make entertaining feel elevated but effortless, and they actually allow me to enjoy the night instead of managing it.
Charcuterie That Feels Thoughtful (and Fun)
A great charcuterie board is my hosting secret weapon. It instantly sets the tone, encourages people to gather, and makes everything feel intentional without being overwhelming.
I took a charcuterie class hosted by Silviboards, led by Ayleen, and it completely changed how I approach boards. Not only was it an amazing girls’ night activity, but I learned so much — from how to build balance and flow to how to make a board feel abundant without overbuying.
Now I feel confident putting together boards that are beautiful, inviting, and actually practical. Guests always gravitate toward them, and they naturally become the center of the room. A well-done charcuterie board doesn’t just feed people — it brings them together.
Candles (Because Ambiance Matters)
Lighting changes everything, and candles are non-negotiable for me when I’m hosting. That said, my friend Liz and I have very strong opinions about candles — especially when it comes to packaging.
A candle can smell incredible, but if it doesn’t look good sitting out, it’s not making the cut. The vessel matters. The label matters. The overall aesthetic matters. Candles should enhance the space, not distract from it.
When guests walk in and see soft candlelight throughout the room, it immediately sets a relaxed, welcoming tone. It’s one of the simplest ways to make a home feel warm and intentional.
Simple Serveware You’ll Use Again and Again
I’m a big believer in neutral, versatile serveware. Wooden boards, white serving bowls, and classic platters that work for every occasion. These are the pieces you reach for without thinking, and they always look good.
When hosting feels easy, it becomes enjoyable — and that’s the whole point.
A Signature Drink Plus Bar Staples
I love offering one signature cocktail or mocktail. It gives guests something special to sip as soon as they arrive and takes the pressure off creating a full drink menu.
That said, I also like to have the basics covered. I always stock vodka, tequila, and gin with simple mixers, along with a few bottles of wine and a light beer option. This way, everyone feels considered, whether they want the featured drink or something familiar.
It’s relaxed, flexible, and makes guests feel at home without turning the night into a bartending shift.
Music, Mood, and Letting Go
A good playlist and a calm mindset matter more than a perfect menu. When the music feels right and the energy is easy, everything flows. Guests won’t remember how many appetizers you served — they’ll remember how they felt in your space.
That’s always the goal.
Hosting doesn’t have to be overthought or overdone. With a few thoughtful staples and a focus on connection, entertaining can feel warm, effortless, and genuinely enjoyable.
Living by Design is about creating spaces where people feel welcome, conversation flows, and no one feels rushed — including the host.
And if there’s a beautiful charcuterie board, a well-packaged candle, and a stocked bar involved? Even better.
